The Little Book of Titanic

RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world when she set off on her maiden voyage from Southampton on 10 April 1912. Four days into the trip she struck an iceberg and sank, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.


The world’s most famous passenger liner set sail for New York with 2,223 people on board; the high casualty rate was due partly to the fact that she carried lifeboats for only 1,178 people. 


Titanic was designed by some of the world’s most experienced engineers and used some of the most advanced technologies available. It was a great shock to many that her maiden voyage ended in such tragedy.


This 100th anniversary book charts her fateful journey and describes the media frenzy about her famous victims; the legends surrounding the sinking; the resulting changes to maritime law; and the discovery of the wreck that have contributed to the long-held fascination in the ocean liner.
