The Little Prince
The Little Prince, published in 1943, is French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's most famous novella. Saint-Exupéry wrote it while living in the United States. It has been translated into more than 190 languages and sold more than 80 million copies, making it one of the best selling books ever.
We thank S. I. Mina - a Canadian student of English literature, for this new and refreshing translation from the French, which allowed us to be able to offer a low cost electronic edition, in English, of this timeless masterpiece of love and loneliness.
This unabridged edition of the classic story about the prince from a tiny planet "hardly bigger than a house" integrates the original illustrations into pop-ups, wheels, and flaps. The text is gracefully balanced against the interactive elements as the Prince shares his story: flaps reveal images like the drawing of a sheep that the narrator makes for him, and delicate pop-ups feature characters he's met, like the clownlike lamp lighter. The pleasing visual effects are subtle, but add an appropriate sense of magic. Ages 9 12.
This was one of my favorite stories growing up; it's timeless and will stick with me forever. I'm glad it's on iBooks at such a low cost. While this translation isn't as fancy as the original, it captures the essence of the story. And that's what's important at the end of the day! The pictures are also of high quality. Good job!
One of the best
This is not just a children's story. It is also a sophisticated philosophical allegory for adults, which emphasizes the responsibility of people for the well-being of others. The prince's encounters on the planets he visited before arriving on Earth, are exposing troublesome behaviour patterns that require altruistic remedies...
On top of that, the story is a delightful whimsical fantasy, written with humor and tenderness, which joins a few select ones as one of the finest pieces of world literature.
This translation is good - not as soft and tender as the original one by Katherine Woods, but for me appears to be closer in meaning and style to the French original.
Overall, it is a good job! Five stars and two thumbs up!
