Mech Workshop is a paradise of gears, cranes, conveyors, pistons, and magnets. Patch Bolt calls it beautiful because it works. Brick Bloom calls it unfinished because it has no joy.

Then Sort-O-Matic wakes up and starts improving the world by deleting anything inefficient. First it removes decorations. Then backup paths. Then the choices that make the team a team.

To save the workshop, Brick and Patch must build a machine that proves imagination can do real work, and find a hidden corridor where five previous foremen left a record of everything the optimization engine wants to delete.
