Pearl Weber never wanted to know the truth about her husband Fritz, an immigrant whom she dearly loved until her death. They were happily married for a short time, when he was recruited to serve back in Europe. He disappeared shortly after World War II ended. Fritz did not know she was pregnant when he left and never met his daughter and grandchildren.

It became the task of Pearl’s grandson Paul to reveal the gripping story of his grandfather’s life. Paul eventually puts together the pieces of the puzzle. But throughout this quest, the reader remains uncertain whether the trail is that of a victim or a predator.
