Alan McIlvain could have been a concert pianist. He chose instead to enter the field of law enforcement as a means of avenging his mother's murder.

He certainly begins to wonder when Caroline Armstrong shows up at police headquarters in Washington, DC and demands that he re-open the case of her missing cousin. Soon he's as busy trying to keep Caroline safe as he is trying to discover the fate of her cousin.
