The Nectar of Eternal Life

An advanced civilization faces planet changing circumstances that will end their present way of life. Engineers and scientists scramble to save just a small portion of their population. Also on their minds is a centuries old discovery. A process was developed that made it possible to extend an individual's life indefinitely, and all that is required is a constant flow of human blood. Understandably reluctant to initiate this mind-blowing change to their way of life, the groundbreaking discovery is shelved. Now, with life as they have known it changing so drastically, the idea is refloated and eventually accepted. To save and extend the lives of their best and brightest was the plan. Terrible but necessary decisions had to be made and a new, smaller Empire is born. An Empire built on blood and maintained by blood. Recognizing their need as both a consumable and a renewable resource, a system is established to fulfill their increasing needs. Even more lives need to be sacrificed to maintain the selfish views of their Empire, because as their blood stock is being nurtured, it is also being studied, and a few special individuals are chosen to become immortal as well, and join the select Vampire society. What a choice to have to make, with no knowledge or warning of it at all, to feed from the blood of your kindred and experience life ever lasting, or sacrifice your own life-blood so that another may live indefinitely. With every passing century, and an un-dying race, the population swells. With no more room to expand, integration into the Empire is reduced, then eventually suspended. This is bad news for a Government worker who has allowed herself to fall in love with a brilliant human. Now she must resort to drastic measures to fulfill her dreams, tricking the man she loves and performing an illegal transformation. His desperate need to kill in order to sustain his own life now, conflicts with his moral compass and he lashes out with vengeance. The woman's selfish action lead to murder, intrigue and a serial killer case the likes of which has never before been experienced by authorities. Now enlightened with the secrets of the Empire, this one, unauthorized, unregistered Vampire, threatens to divulge the Empire's atrocities to the millions of humans who are raised, nurtured and lied to until the age of 22.
