Tom is working on the last day of the reed cutting season when he realises he is being watched. A young lady, his social better, is looking at him as no well-born young miss should - she wants him.
They take a wordless tumble in the reeds, a brief passion that has an effect on the rest of their lives as they each try to seek that moment in the reed bed again.
