Retro SF at its finest
Nothing about this story seems remarkable, until you remind yourself that it was written in 1951. Mesons had only been discovered experimentally in 1947, and applied nucleonics was still in its infancy. Clarke’s powers of extrapolation are impressive.
It’s a real shame that closer examination of Mars ruled out the possibility of plant life, let alone animals. But I think we all secretly hoped…
