The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Other Short Stories by James Thurber is a collection of short stories and fables. The title piece, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, deals with a mild-mannered man who lives a typical life with his wife and at work. During his ordinary life he begins to have a series of heroic daydream episodes that release him from his mundane surroundings.

The title story is also the basis for the hit movie starring Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig.
