Essential reading for anyone who loves a scary story, The Shining is a key title in the history of gothic supernatural fiction. Yes, Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation is memorable, but Stephen King’s book is better. The novel perfectly exemplifies a key element of King’s appeal: his ability to unite heart-stopping terror with all-too-human characters slogging their way through a recognizably challenging world. It’s this quality that makes the story of recovering alcoholic Jack Torrance and his mysteriously gifted son, Danny, crazily emotionally gripping. Bonus: after you read The Shining, you’ll be primed to read another great King novel, Doctor Sleep.

It’s all about the writing!
This was my second time reading this book, but first time in English. I read it in Portuguese, in 1980, when I was 16 years old.
I enjoyed it a lot more than I can remember. It’s a great horror story combining natural and supernatural, complex characters and an eerie atmosphere.
The writing and the storytelling are simply superb!
The story shows that no one is free from the past and the ways we are haunted by it.
Yes, this is more than a horror story.
The development is slow, but the writing is super engaging.
It’s Good but just watch the Film
Well written and scary but there’s nothing in here that Kubrick changed that I disagree with. Makes a better film than a book, especially with that director’s pedigree. Will save you about 10 hours too.
Fantastic need a hard copy for my library
I loved this book! The characters are so well rounded and interesting. The not so slow decent into madness with Jack was mesmerizing to follow. I am sad I didn’t read this sooner!
