Having fought for the Crown, the warrior Macbeth enjoys renown and favour of a loving king. He might have been content with this triumph but for a meeting with three witches, who prophesy that he will become king.

Their predictions awake in Macbeth a terrible desire; and his wife, Lady Macbeth, is only too keen to aid his bloody ambitions. They resolve to take mattters into their own hands, but they can hardly know what dreadful consequences they will affect. The witches’ intentions ought not to be trusted, and their prophecies are more cunning than they first appear.
