All Lady Berenice de Freycinet wants is to rule her secluded valley in peace. One hot summer's day, Gareth the Troubadour arrives at her gate. Although she knows she shouldn't allow him to stay, something in his eyes prevents her from turning him away.

Unknown to Berenice, her neighbour, the vicious Fulk, Count of Betizac, wants to extend his lands. A new, young wife can only sweeten the pot, as his previous spouses met untimely demises. He plots Berenice's abduction and subsequent marriage.
