Giles Winterborne and Grace Melbury have been sweethearts since childhood. They plan to marry and live out their simple happily-ever-after in Giles’s small woodland hut. Grace’s father, on the other hand, desires a different outcome for his only daughter. The small town of Little Hintock does not offer many resources, but Mr. Melbury has invested as much as he can afford so Grace can procure an education and marry a man of higher social standing. When the new town doctor, the young and attractive Edgar Fitzpiers, moves into town, Mr. Melbury encourages Grace to shift her attention away from Giles and seek Fitzpiers’s hand in marriage.
