Why does Bradley Chalkers sit at the back of class all day, ripping up paper and threatening his classmates? Louis Sachar, the author of Holes, gets inside his young protagonist’s head just as he’s connecting with the new school counselor—and it’s both exciting and heartbreaking to watch Bradley struggle to change. Sachar provides plenty of funny moments to delight young readers, but the brilliance of his story comes from sensitively showing the difference between the outward image that people project and what’s going on inside.
