Publisher Description
Award-winning actor, director, producer, and activist Kerry Washington shares the deeply moving journey of her life so far, and the "beautiful" story of discovering her truth in this instant New York Times bestseller (Oprah Winfrey).
While on a drive in Los Angeles, on a seemingly average afternoon, Kerry Washington received a text message that would send her on a life-changing journey of self-discovery. In an instant, her very identity was torn apart, with everything she thought she knew about herself thrown into question.
In Thicker than Water, Washington gives readers an intimate view into both her public and private worlds—as a mother, daughter, wife, artist, advocate, and trailblazer. Chronicling her upbringing and life’s journey thus far, she reveals how she faced a series of challenges and setbacks, effectively hid childhood traumas, met extraordinary mentors, managed to grow her career, and crossed the threshold into stardom and political advocacy, ultimately discovering her truest self and, with it, a deeper sense of belonging.
Throughout this profoundly moving and beautifully written memoir, Washington attempts to answer the questions so many have struggled with: Who am I? What is my truest and most authentic self? How do I find a deeper sense of connection and belonging? With grace and honesty, she inspires readers to search for—and find—themselves.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
In this open and honest memoir, Kerry Washington makes it clear that she’s done hiding her true self. When her parents hit her with a startling revelation just as her wildly popular TV show Scandal was ending, the celebrated performer was forced to re-examine her worldview and her life. She uses her writing to dive into the stories of her childhood, unpacking how her parents’ fighting led to feeling responsible for their happiness and, eventually, to panic attacks. And she gets candid about how even a successful acting career couldn’t quell her self-doubt. Like a dam breaking, Washington lets her thoughts and emotions burst through, making for a strikingly honest book without an ounce of pretension. Washington was already hugely likeable, but Thicker Than Water made us admire the actress even more.

So many revealing secrets!
This book was interesting as it divulged many secrets from the life of Kerry Washington. She’s a class act actor of the hit series Scandal. She’s also an international well known actor in movies like Ray, The last king of Scotland and Django Unchained. I was surprised to see her write this book as she has kept her personal life extremely private in spite of being famous for her acting roles. In this book, you get a sense of what makes Kerry herself and the trauma she had to deal with since a young age. You also see her trajectory to become a relatively unknown actress to a renowned one. I like that she went to college and India to refine her acting skill sets. She really took acting like a vocation. She even define herself by the roles she takes that help her grow personally. It’s remarkable, I never saw acting as a profession where you study people to make characters believable. She does it like science study anthropology to learn better the art of acting. In general I like the book as it provide a glimpse to the life of private famous actor. It showed me that success seems easy from the outsider view but you have no idea of the road it took to get there. I didn’t know too that 90% of actors that are in the Union are not working actors. It takes passion and dedication to persevere and hit an opportunity that can change your life in acting. It doesn’t hurt to have luck on your side too! Great book! Blood is thicker than water but love is thicker than blood! Love it!
