Being the world’s biggest fan of an unfinished fantasy series turns out to be surprisingly useful survival training in this wickedly inventive portal fantasy from Ilona Andrews. When Maggie wakes up in a gutter in the city of Kair Toren, she realizes she’s somehow landed inside her favourite dark fantasy series, which she’s spent years obsessively rereading. Her detailed knowledge of the story’s scheming warlords and feuding princes is her only advantage as she bonds with an unlikely crew and races to stop the catastrophic war she knows is coming. Andrews nails Maggie’s sharp and funny internal voice, building high-stakes tension around the challenge of knowing her new friends’ fates before they do. Maggie’s habit of weaponizing her superfan expertise against enemies who have no idea what she knows is endlessly entertaining, and the slow-burn tension between her and a dangerously compelling soldier makes This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me a thoroughly satisfying read.

Brilliant as ever. Ilona Andrews consistently delivers a fun read.
Possibly the best Ilona Andrew’s yet
I love all of their series. I’ve read them all multiple times. This is so much. It’s a gift to the readers (the BDH iykyk). It takes all the character and world building they’ve learned and creates this masterpiece that has ripped out my heart. I’m not sure how to cope with some of it and yet the second book is so far away! Absolutely worth devouring.
