Tolcarne Merock

In 1942, when two young Land Army girls arrive at the Cornish farm of Tolcarne Merock, Reuben Gutheridge the old bachelor farmer and his farm worker Norman Innis are not sure what to make of them. But Reuben appreciates the free labour as does Norman a new pair of good-looking females.

However, Marcia and Ruby soon prove their worth working on the farm, and they both settle down well in the small community. They discover country life is certainly not dull, with dances at the village hall and all-night parties on the farm helped along by Reuben’s illicit supply of alcohol.

Ruby and Norman fall in love and become engaged, and Marcia meets and falls in love with Webster, an RAF navigator from the nearby wartime airfield.

With Webster flying most nights on bombing raids over war-torn Germany, Marcia’s natural concern over his life becomes even greater following a troublesome dream. Yet even in her worst nightmare she could not have envisaged that both of them would end up shot down deep within the German countryside.

Thus unfolds a chapter from the history of Tolcarne Merock. With  cantankerous old Reuben turning out to have a sensitive side to his character, and the lives of Ruby, Norman, Marcia and Webster becoming ever more inextricably linked.
