Romance, revelation, and healing collide in this emotionally hard-hitting sixth instalment of Sarah J. Maas’ epic Throne of Glass series. Battered hero Chaol Westfall is dispatched to the Southern Continent in an attempt to heal his shattered spine and equally fractured sense of purpose. Journeying with him is Nesryn Faliq, a former city guard. The two try to form an allegiance with the region’s leaders, but it quickly descends into a messy web of buried history, magic, and complicated political machinations, all with an ancient threat rising beneath their feet. The novel takes place in a timeline parallel to Empire of Storms, and we loved its slow-burn patience and how Maas gives space and time to Chaol’s recovery, both physical and emotional. There’s a sharp contrast between the intimate, character-driven emotional healing sessions and the epic flights and battles, but they all feel of a piece. High-fantasy fans will love this unexpectedly contemplative detour about acceptance, growth, and acknowledging the darkness within.

So compelling
Honestly loved the development of peripheral characters getting their time in the sun (pun intended). Broken and imperfect people are the most interesting. Loved every word.
Worth the read!!
After the ending of EOS I was hesitant when I found out this book cantered around Chaol and Nesryn, and wasn’t sold at the first couple chapters, but boy am I glad I read it, not only is there information for the story line that I think is vital, but the character development and some new people met along the way was definitely worth it. I feel kingdom of ash would become confusing without reading parts of this (not to mention some subtle hints at some of SJM’s other books)
