A map found in a dead seaman's chest, a one-legged cook who is friendly to the boy, and an island where the treasure has already been moved. Stevenson drew the map first, to amuse his stepson on a wet holiday, and wrote the story to fit it. Everything the world now believes about pirates - the black spot, the parrot, the marked X - comes from this book. Its 85 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
