What Does the "Ground Zero" Islamic Community Center Symbolize? "Many views in favor of this project see it as one that can bridge the gap between religions, and turn the page of the past, transforming the stereotyped image of Islam and Muslims that was created in the minds of millions by the events of 11 September [2001]," wrote Ali Ahmed al-Baghli in Kuwait's daily AL QABAS on August 16. For many, the pertinent question really is one of symbolism. For its supporters, the Cordoba House Initiative, renamed the more innocuous "Park 51", would be a symbol of all that is good and right with the American Constitution; a granting of religious freedom, a dialogue among cultures, and a freedom from persecution for minority groups.
