In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. Then with the start of World War II, the athlete became an airman. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived. Ahead of him lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion.

Yet Zamperini’s willpower faced its ultimate test upon his heroic return home after the war. He grappled with PTSD, struggled to come to terms with the injustices done to him, and was set on the path of redemption by a momentous encounter with famed reverend Billy Graham.

An unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

What a story!!!

I guess we all read biographies in order to gain some insights into human nature, but Hillenbrand's insights are incredible. "Unbroken" is a powerful glimpse into the best and the worst of our species. The effort she put into writing this account is obvious from page 1. I am still in awe that an author could piece together another person's life's story so brilliantly.

We have no clue!

Incredible true story of the rarely referenced Japanese narrative of the Second World War. Almost all modern day recollections focus on Germany, for the obvious reasons, but this book sheds light on the almost unbelievable horrors endured by the allies fighting realistically two wars at once. If anyone wants to feel truly humbled, and absorb what these men endured for us, please read this book.

I finally understand what "fought for our freedom" really means. It took this book to make me understand.

Should be compulsory reading in high school!

An amazing story which provides an accurate and first-hand account of WW2 and its attrocities. The best 'history lesson' I've ever had.
