After traveling by ship to an unfamiliar land, eighteen-year-old Joslyn knows little about the man her father has chosen as her husband. With her brother Stanley as her escort, he has remained mysteriously silent about the details of her betrothed.

By his father's order, Stanley was sworn to secrecy. He knows the man his sister is to marry possesses a wicked reputation. Stanley has done his best to train Joslyn to defend herself with a dagger and a longbow and to use her wit to escape life-threatening situations. As they continue their journey toward Joslyn's betrothed, Stanley warns her about the land's vicious thieves and tells her to always stay on guard.

Out of respect for her father, Joslyn is determined to make the best of the forced marriage. She hopes her betrothed is tolerable and that they will not spend a lifetime as enemies.
