The Beautiful and the Beastly Sides of Magic
Emma Weylin brings a fresh perspective to the love-at-first-fight story in her book, Undying Hope. Or is it love-at-first-flight? Haven Killian is running from a monster of a man and the ancient organization he is about to command. Evil forces find her, but a powerful leader of the Undying finds her too, containing a deadly force all his own. He could turn out to be her salvation or her end. Everything depends on what they find between them.
Even when there is an instant connection in a relationship, there is so much more to work out. How often do writers skip the private, tense moments where a couple learns to actually live together? Weylin smoothly moves Haven and Donovan from obvious attraction to playful touching to steamy excitement and full realization. But she goes further, giving her characters room to work out all the things that come after.
I mean, Haven and Donovan wrestle with those real squabbles that come between couples, like what’s in the kitchen cupboards, how will they clear dangerous compulsions from past lovers, why would a grandfather want someone evil to marry his granddaughter, and who really makes the final decision to undergo the dangerous transition of becoming immortal?
