I read Up the Organization as a high school student. Now reading it over 45 years later, it is incredible how it became part of my DNA without realizing it. Much like Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals it was part of a literature that told my generation to ask the impertinent question and subvert the dominant paradigm. For those of us who found Townsden’s way to combne this with the benefits of creating postiive work spaces where people could flourish the results were true success and ejoyable careers. The challenge is to bring the learning of work life balance to this paradigm in a way he could not see but not lose his iconoclastic genius.
