This book is the result of the elaborates produced by the  "Intensive Design Workshop" for the fifth year students. Now in its third edition, this way to weld teaching and research on the project as part of the activities of the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design of the Second University of Naples generates lots of really interesting results. Every autumn comes the opportunity to bring together teachers of all grades and cultural backgrounds, PhDs, particularly interesting designers for the Italian cultural scene and student. The publication of the results of the Workshop through the digital format supported by AOS brand allows you to disclose the results of giving the opportunity to enjoy them for free in Italian and English in 51 countries and, therefore, to make public the results of the project research of the Department.

The tree of Life

The fourth edition of the Intensive Design Workshop for fifth year students, which was carried out in nine days of two weeks between September and October 2016, confirmed the results of ICAR 14’s commitment, that began September 2013, towards this design experience. The new participative shape introduced for academic year 2016/2017 successfully experimented the possibility of placing side by side our professors and architect, regular guests of the atelier, with two authorities which are close to architects and one of the Municipalities that hosts our University. So, active and present with us were InArch and its Campania section as, since 1959, the Institution founded by Bruno Zevi promotes Italian architecture and the former Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari of Caserta (today ACER) as it practically builds architecture and the Comune di Maddaloni  as it offered the study site to our atelier. An area of public building, of condominiums, of markets that, with a street halo, was transformed in an isle, in an enclave, in a fort. Past and present live together on the site which today, between concrete buildings and asphalt, concelas the traces of Capua’s centuriatio not as well as the Carolingian Aqueduct ones which, almost emerging, almost became its wooded bisector. With a glimpse its possible to see the Medieval village and its beautiful towers, beyond the historic city center, the tallest of which to see further over. Far beyond, as the students’ works have been, as our early approach to the intrusive image of something in the middle of an asphalt void, that serves its purpose just 6 or 7 hours on a weekly basis, such as the the tree of life in James Cameron’s “Avatar”, clearly visible from far away and continuous fount of energy and enthusiasm for the whole community.
