Introduction The story of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC) is one of the most important in American religious history. From the beginning it has been impacted by controversy over the designation of L. Venchael Booth as its founder. Throughout his life Booth worked assiduously and strategically to clarify his role. He did so not only to safeguard his legacy but also, as he believed, the soul of the Convention. By various means and ways he reiterated his point. (1) He sensed a pressing need to impress upon the PNBC membership the religious significance and meaning of his achievement.
