This 1900 volume provides an amply illustrated edition of Thackeray's classic novel, with scenes from a theatrical adaptation of the work and drawings by the author. Borrowing the title from a location in John Bunyan's allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, Thackeray used the essence of Bunyan's fictional never-ending fair (symbolizing man's attachment to material goods) as a foundation for the bestselling novel. Featuring stories of Amelia Sedley, Becky Sharp, Rawdon Crawley, George Osborn, William Dobbin and others in Victorian London society, the novel tackles topics of love, marriage, wealth, education and family, examining the social conventions attached to each during the time. Now considered a classic, Vanity Fair has been adapted into movies, television series and stage performances. While the ending is rather dark, Thackeray explained that the novel's conclusion was meant to inspire readers to look inward and evaluate their own flaws.
