A woman betrayed young resolves never to marry and holds to it against every argument the book can put. Augusta Evans wrote for the South, sold in enormous numbers, and gave her heroines more learning than most male novelists gave their heroes. This edition adds a gallery of 58 plates, among them paintings by Aloysius O'Kelly, Thomas Gibson and William Etty, plus one restored and coloured in-text illustration.
