One of the best known customs of the Civil War was the singing of the country’s best known tunes, such as the Battle Hymn of the Republic, Dixie, Bonnie Blue Flag, and more. Even President Lincoln himself admitted that he loved the tune Dixie, and he even asked that it be played shortly after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. 

In 1862, still in the middle of the war, William G. Shepperson put together a compendium of the war songs of the South, comprising dozens of songs and poems about individual states, generals like PGT Beauregard, battles like First Manssas, and more. This edition of War Songs of the South is specially formatted with the original illustrations and over 30 pictures of famous Civil War generals and leaders. It also includes a table of contents for easier navigation.
