Washington's Boyhood

This book was written to help supply a demand for good literature adapted to young children, presented in an attractive and interesting manner.


A child, while learning to read, should also acquire through its reading matter, valuable information and a good vocabulary. This book aims to provide both. The main portion of the book is devoted to the story of George Washington’s boyhood, based on history and tradition. A few pages describe George Washington’s later life. Many interesting lessons in Nature Study, Animal life, History and Industry are contained in the book. There are also stories that kindle the imagination.


An effort has been made to present George Washington, not as the timid, stereotyped, perfect boy often held up as an unwelcome pattern for children, but as a normal, fun-loving, healthy child of good habits, with much courage and a love for out-door sports, and with temptations like any other boy of his age. It is hoped he will thus be endeared to his young readers and his many virtues, which are strongly emphasized, will be imitated.
