Publisher Description
In #1 New York Times–bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's latest thriller, the town of Rockton—and her fans—are in for another hair-raising adventure.
When you can't trust the people you're supposed to trust most, what do you do?
The secret town of Rockton has seen some tough times lately; understandable considering its mix of criminals and victims fleeing society for refuge within its Yukon borders.
Casey Duncan, the town's only detective on a police force of three, has already faced murder, arson and falling in love in the several months she's lived there. Yet even she didn't think it would be possible for an outsider to find the town and cause trouble in the place she's come to call home.
When a US marshal shows up demanding the release of one of the residents—but won't say who—Casey and her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are skeptical. Then, hours later, the marshal is shot dead and the only visible suspects are the townspeople and Casey's estranged sister, smuggled into town to help with a medical emergency. It's up to Casey to figure out who murdered the marshal, and why they would kill to keep him quiet—before the killer strikes again.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Armstrong fuses small-town mystery with high-concept thriller in her propulsive fourth Rockton novel (after 2018's This Fallen Prey). When U.S. marshal Mark Garcia arrives in Rockton hunting a dangerous fugitive whom he declines to name until caught, residents are understandably alarmed; the off-grid Canadian Yukon settlement is meant to be a sanctuary for those hoping to disappear. Det. Casey Duncan and her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, order Garcia to leave, citing a lack of jurisdiction, but Garcia refuses. When a sniper shoots the marshal, Casey and Dalton must identify Garcia's target, solve his murder, and determine how he found the supposedly secret refuge all before the U.S. government comes looking for their missing agent. Complicating matters is the fact that Casey and Dalton broke protocol to smuggle in an outsider Casey's sister, April just prior to Garcia's arrival. Casey's present-tense narration heightens tension, while colorful characters with checkered pasts add humor, intrigue, and heart. New readers and longtime fans will enjoy Armstrong's adrenaline-fueled plot, which cleverly capitalizes upon her inventive series premise.
Customer Reviews
Great add to the series.
It’s difficult for me to get connected with a series, but I really enjoy this series and find myself always excited for the next instalment.
Never Enough
As always, a good Rockton novel ends too quickly. This one takes you on a joy ride of twists and turns akin to a roller coaster of PNE quality. And like the PNE it’s here for a short time then gone leaving you wanting more. Can’t wait to see what Casey and Eric deal with next.
