Publisher Description

This commemorative booklet is a unique historical document illustrating the travels of former president Theodore Roosevelt. After he retired from his presidency, Roosevelt, only 50 years old, decided to go on an expedition in East Africa to hunt big game. The Smithsonian co-sponsored the expedition, which included three representatives from the museum, Roosevelt and his son Kermit, the official photographer. There was extensive press coverage of the journey, and Scribner's Weekly Magazine paid Roosevelt $50,000 to write about the trip. When Roosevelt returned form his year-long adventure, Robert J. Collier of Collier's Weekly Magazine hosted a dinner in Roosevelt's honor. Collier created this booklet, for which Maxfield Parrish illustrated the cover. Included in the booklet are photographs, stories, poems and cartoons about the adventure. The menu and seating chart for the dinner are also displayed.
