Publisher Description
Which Way Is Up? Fragmentary Reports from the Field gathers stories, fragments of stories, prose poems, dreams, observations and assorted disturbances written across several years and several places. The pieces move through Bogor, Phnom Penh, Ha Noi and other physical or imagined locations, where roads, houses, traffic, animals, family life, memory, politics, language and the operations of the mind are all liable to become unstable.
At times comic, satirical, philosophical or surreal, the book treats fragmentation not as a problem to be repaired but as a way of looking. A motorscooter ride becomes an inquiry into competing minds; a hen contemplates the examination of a giant corpse; village chickens announce an expedition to Chomolungma; dreams and stray sentences acquire the weight of field reports. Throughout, language itself is repeatedly prodded, stretched and allowed to wander off course.
Which Way Is Up? is experimental fiction for readers comfortable with uncertainty, digression and the possibility that disorder may sometimes be a more accurate report from the field than a neatly arranged account.
