Though its central characters are in their late teens, Jennifer E. Smith’s Windfall isn't your average coming-of-age story. When sweet orphan Alice gives her friend (and crush) Teddy a lottery ticket for his 18th birthday, she has no way of knowing that both their lives will be changed forever. Smith subverts the traditional rags-to-riches structure and weaves themes of friendship, family, and grief against the backdrop of a sweet, slow-burning romance. It’s an entirely charming homage to the twinkling magic of first loves and the devastation of teen heartbreak.

Though the plot is somewhat predictable, Smith's dynamic characters and their complex struggles (including Alice's gay cousin, Leo, who has his own share of conflicts) will keep readers invested.
