Working it Out

This book was the first Ruthie Pearlman ever had published, written in 1988 and published two years later. It follows the fortune of a determined young orthodox Jewish girl who wants to break out of the expected life plan that her community has for her, and study medicine. It starts with her at school, moves on to her working life, her family’s emigration to a settlement on the Israeli West Bank, seminary, an Arab attack, her father’s terminal illness, and finally her marriage. Despite these hurdles Rifki maintains her determination to succeed in her medical career whilst not abandoning the dictates of her faith. This book, when it first came out, changed lives. We are hoping its new lease of life will continue to do so.
