Worlds Apart II

This story is one of endeavour, intrigue and apparent failure. John Tilly was born in Ringwood, Hampshire in 1697 into a family of aspiring business folk. Determined to make his fortune, he commenced quarrying in the Purbeck Hills, creating the 'Tilly Whim' mine. However, he was imprisoned for alleged criminal activities and fled to Newfoundland . His religious faith sustained him throughout his life, being one of those who initiated the construction of the Dissenting Congregational Chapel in Ringwood (still in use today) and a timber church in Bonavista, Newfoundland. This book provides a fascinating insight into life in eighteenth century England and Newfoundland through the eyes of a man who worked, travelled and gained riches of both material and spiritual value.
