The blonde at his side says she’s his mistress (is she?) and police say he assaulted his girlfriend, Megan (did he?). This instalment in Lisa Jackson’s San Francisco–based mystery series is stacked with one twist after another. Like a master magician, Jackson fools us again and again, introducing characters who seem sinister only to turn good, ones who appear noble only to prove heinous, or best of all, some who seem to be both at the same time. We loved how we never knew whom to root for from one page to the next. A psychological thriller as breathlessly dramatic as its title, You Betrayed Me is a wickedly entertaining read.
