Punk started much earlier than we think: enter the seductive subculture created by three rebellious boys navigating the sparkling world of the Elizabethan court

Three young noblemen – heirs to some of the greatest titles in the land – come of age under the watchful eye of William Cecil, the Queen’s formidable advisor. Orphaned and made wards of the crown, Robert Devereux, Henry Wriothesley and Roger Manners are expected to conform, marry advantageously and secure the political order. Instead, they resist.

In Tudor Punks, Lucy Moore recasts these figures as rebellious, volatile and dangerously charismatic, part of a generation pushing back against a court defined by surveillance, ambition and intrigue. Moving through a world of Shakespeare, Sidney and Bacon, they inhabit a culture alive with artistic experiment, sexual ambiguity and whispered accusations of treason, witchcraft and religious dissent. The word ‘punk’ itself dates to this period, meaning scoundrel or whore – but these young men were also punks in the modern sense.

Following their lives from adolescence to catastrophe, culminating in Essex’s doomed revolt against Elizabeth I, Moore reveals a group bound by friendship, rivalry and defiance shining a vivid, subversive and new light on a familiar period of history.
