In the story “Annie’s Pen Pal,” two young girls, one from Illinois and the other from South Carolina become Pen Pals in the years leading up to the Civil War. Although Annie and Sarah do not always agree, they share their “growing pains” with each other and their confusion about of the differences in their parents’ political views.
“In Annie’s Confederate Gold,” the girls, who are now in their teens, can no long communicate because of the war. Each tells her own experience of how the war effects her life.
For Sarah, her greatest worry is that her brother has joined the Army of the North. For Annie, the consequences of the ongoing war bring imminent danger to her family and her community.
