Josephine Preston Peabody was an American writer of verse dramas and of poetry that ranged from precise, ethereal verse to works of social concern. One of her most famous works became the collection “Old Greek Folk Stories Told Anew”, published in 1894, included the fanciest versions of the most interesting myths.


“Atalanta's Race” is the legend about the maiden Atalanta, who was resolved to live unwed, and at last she devised a plan to be rid of all her suitors. She was known far and wide as the swiftest runner of her time; and so she said that she would only marry that man who could outstrip her in the race, but that all who dared to try and failed must be put to death…
