Lucas plucked the gin out of the liquor cabinet. “Planted your letter in the viscount’s manor. Don’t believe I was followed. Drink?” He offered Fitzroy the bottle.


This temporarily distracted the man, who frowned at what Lucas had poured for himself. “That’s mine, you know. And yes. Did you take anything?”


“What? No.”


Fitzroy did not show the relief Lucas had expected him to, but frowned deeper. “Really?” He beckoned Lucas up the stairs casually, taking the gin with him as he did so.


“Alright, yeah, but nothing they’d miss.” Lucas fished in his pockets for the statuettes. “Only a bit a’ gold.”
