I The Thought of Limits PHILOSOPHERS have long wondered what consciousness is; indeed, it is no exaggeration to say it is the current reigning preoccupation of the discipline, a professional cash cow generating much in the way of debate, dispute, and journal references. And yet, much of what is now written seems weirdly disembodied still, despite much recent abuse of Cartesian ideas ("dangerous," according to Antonio Damasio; "disastrous," says John Searle). The following reflections on thresholds constitute an idiosyncratic but, I hope, searching response to that problem.
