Systems engineer Shaun has spent months deciphering the alien technology buried inside Bunker 42. When she finally unlocks its sealed records, she discovers a truth powerful enough to fracture the fragile peace between the human survivors and their Zmaj allies.

The altered warriors sleeping in the bunker were created for war.

And one of them may be the only person capable of saving everyone trapped underground.

Dalagh was once a member of the Breakers, an elite Zmaj unit sent into the galaxy's most dangerous conflicts. The scientists of Bunker 42 grafted extra limbs onto his body, altered him to survive lethal radiation, and tried to overwrite his memories. Dalagh resisted every false reality they forced into his mind.

So they buried him in suspended animation until their technology could become strong enough to fool him.

When Shaun wakes him, Dalagh explodes out of the tube ready to fight his captors.

Then he sees her.

Dalagh knows Shaun as S'khan, the mate he loved before the Devastation destroyed Tajss. He believes fate has returned her to him in a new body and a new lifetime.

Shaun does not remember him.
