This is the first in a four-volume series on the brief period of history after the execution of King Charles I when England became a Commonwealth led by Oliver Cromwell. This first volume discusses the founders of the Commonwealth, its offices and organization, how it dealt with the complicated topic of religion, the state of Scotland during the Commonwealth and the history of the end of King Charles' reign during the English Civil War.
