Brazil is one of the great physical economies of the twenty-first century. Iron ore, coffee, soy, oil, energy and other resources connect its interior to ports, shipping routes and markets across the Atlantic and Asia. COFFEE follows those systems from resource to infrastructure, from infrastructure to trade, and from trade to economic power. It asks a larger question: what determines Brazil’s place in the world economy — the resources it possesses, or the systems it can build around them?
