Gaston Camille Charles Maspero (June 23, 1846 – June 30, 1916) was a French Egyptologist, who popularized the term "Sea Peoples" in an 1881 paper. His son Henri Maspero, became a notable sinologist and scholar of East Asia. He was born in Paris in a family of immigrants from Italy. In 1867, Maspero met leading French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, who offered him two relatively complex hieroglyphic text Maspero translated them for two weeks. The publication of these translations the student brought Maspero known in academic circles, but he went to Peru to accompany one of the many "researchers" who sought confirmation of communication with Indian Indo-Europeans.
