by Sophia Zhu (1915-2009)

Beschreibung des Verlags

Sophia Zhu was a women who was born in early 1910s and experienced her life through the Second World War, the communist China, the culture revolution and the post culture revolution eras.

As a child, she was a naughty kid just like every other child; she planned to study in Hawaii but the war guided her life to another path. During the anti-Japanese war, she did relief work with her husband for the suffering Chinese people. After the war, the couple went to Yale for 2 years and had an amazing time in the USA where they they studied and met a lot of people.

Not long after they came back to China, her husband committed suicide in the anti-rightest movement in China and she suffered a great deal during the culture revolution.

This book was written in 1988, a decade after the culture revolution, when Sophia retired from her teaching work in the Hunan Medical University. She only showed this book to some of her close friends at the time. When she passed away in 2009, I organized her belongs and found this autobiography. I read it and found it very interesting and touching and decided to publish online for free and translate it into Chinese. You may see the translated version at /. This is part of my family history and you can also see China in the past 50 years and Sino-America relations from another direction.
