Joel Chandler Harris was born on December 9, 1848, in Eatonton, Georgia. He was an American fiction writer, folklorist and journalist, who was best-known by his collection of the stories of Uncle Remus. He died of acute nephritis and complications from cirrhosis of the liver on July 3, 1908, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Uncle Remus is a fictional character, the storyteller in the seven books written by the author Joel Chandler Harris. The books written about him represent a collection of folk tales, animal stories and songs collected from the African Americans living in the Southern United States.

This book is one of the seven books of Uncle Remus. It contains seventy-one tales, myths, legends and ghost stories, which represent the most popular narratives of the author. The stories are told by four slave storytellers. Here, apart from the stories, you will find included illustrations in colors suiting the content of the stories.

This book, along with the other books about Uncle Remus, which has been read and loved by children for so many years, is considered as an important contribution to the study and understanding of the Afro-American folklore and culture, in general.
