You may have noticed that there has been an active discussion in school library land when it comes to the link between ICT standards and the Common Core Standards initiative sponsored by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Listservs are heating up, work in virtual spaces like Nings and wikis is consumed with the thought, while the Twitterverse explodes with every new update or announcement and the blogosphere is fairly reeling off its axis with opinion and predictions. Some say that this is the best thing that has ever happened to help underscore the importance and value of teacher-librarians, and others say that the Common Core is nothing short of a cookie cutter approach to standards and that we need to walk away from them, as fast as we can, or risk losing our integrity--and worse yet--contributing to educational malpractice. And the debate isn't solely limited to how teacher-librarians view the initiative. Other professional organizations and associations are just as divided on how to deal with the Common Core Standards juggernaut; especially as a jackpot of federal money is tied to them.
