We've previously noted Wolfe's mention in E. B. White's essay "An Approach to Style" in The Elements of Style by Strunk and White (TWR, 23.2 [1999]: 43). In Stylized: A Slightly Obsessive History of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style (Simon and Schuster, 2009), Mark Garvey writes extensively about White's path toward publishing the famous manual on style. White mailed the manuscript to his editor, Jack Case, on 24 November 1958, explaining: I've done nothing about permissions. I quote Wolfe, Faulkner, Hemingway, Cather, Frost, Whitman.
